Every year millions of Americans pay outrageous sums of money to treat acne. Many of them have found these treatments to be lacking.
Thankfully for these people a new innovation is Aesthetic Medicine is available at the premier Med Spa in the South Loop of Chicago: The Eclipse MicroPen.
The MicroPen is a Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) that opens skin pores and stimulates collagen production resulting in clearer, smoother and healthier skin. It is safe to use all over the face, neck, back and abdomen.
The procedure takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated. Some patients only need a single treatment, once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with serious acne 6-8 sessions at 6 week intervals are recommended.
What Causes Acne?
Acne occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.
Hair follicles are connected to oil glands. These glands secrete an oily substance (sebum) to lubricate the hair and skin. Sebum normally travels along the hair shafts and through the openings of the hair follicles onto the surface of your skin.
When your body produces an excess amount of sebum and dead skin cells, the two can build up in the hair follicles. They form a soft plug, creating an environment where bacteria can thrive and survive. If the clogged pore becomes infected with bacteria, inflammation results.
The plugged pore may cause the follicle wall to bulge and produce a whitehead. Or the plug may be open to the surface and may darken, causing a blackhead. A blackhead may look like dirt stuck in pores. But actually the pore is congested with bacteria and oil, which turns brown when it's exposed to the air.
Pimples are raised red spots with a white center that develop when blocked hair follicles become inflamed or infected. Blockages and inflammation that develop deep inside hair follicles produce cyst-like lumps beneath the surface of your skin.
Acne can be triggered by numerous causes, including but not limited to:
Hormones: Androgens are hormones that increase in boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy and the use of oral contraceptives also can affect sebum production.
Medications: Drugs containing corticosteroids, androgens or lithium can worsen acne.
Diet: Studies indicate that certain dietary factors, including dairy products and carbohydrate-rich foods — such as bread, bagels and chips — may trigger acne. Chocolate has long been suspected of making acne worse. A recent study of 14 men with acne showed that eating chocolate was related to an increase in acne. Further study is needed to examine why this happens or whether acne patients need to follow specific dietary restrictions.
Stress: Stress can make acne worse.
How Do Microneedling Treatments Work?
A sterile cartridge tip containing 12 points is attached to the Eclipse MicroPen®. Your skincare specialist, Crystal Spaeth RN will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate pen setting based on your unique needs. Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.
Does Microneedling Hurt?
The feeling reported with the Eclipse MicroPen® is similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin. While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the MicroPen® tip reduces discomfort while the applied hydrating gel also makes the treatment more tolerable.
What is the Recovery Time?
Immediately after the treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the Eclipse MicroPen® setting used and the number of overlapping passes are preformed.
On average, patients are red up to 2 to 4 days. Some patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours. Utilizing the Eclipse Dermal Recovery System™, or other quality skincare products, provided by your skincare provider, can help to speed up the post-care process.
How Soon Will I Notice Results?
Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment as collagen production continues.

The scourge of cellulite has plagued mankind since the beginning of time. People with the unsightly dimpling or cottage cheese like effect on their legs and thighs waste millions of dollars every year on balms & cremes that have no effect on cellulite. Thankfully there is Cellulaze, a great new FDA approved laser cellulite treatment in Chicago IL.
Cellulaze delivers long lasting results in as little as 1 treatment. From the makers of Smart lipo laser liposuction, Cellulaze uses the same laser technology to heat the fat and bands below the skin that cause the appearance of cellulite. The tiny instrumentation allows precise treatment of the targeted area. The gentle heat from the laser tightens and smooths the skin and stimulates the body's own natural collagen production. The end result is long lasting smooth, tight and healthy skin.
Many Cellulaze treatment patients speak about the joy of being able to wear a bathing suit again. "Knowing the cellulite is gone and hasn't come back is a liberating feeling," says Jane of Chicago. "I feel sexy again. My confidence is back."
